Anime Fillers

Something we’ve all had to deal with if we’ve been watching Anime for any sort of time. Every anime has it, even the best of them and even the short ones that run only one season of 26 or so episodes. So the question is for those of you wondering what is a filler?

A segment of anime, whether it be an entire episode or part of one, which does not appear in the manga of the title. Fillers, as the name implies, “fills” an episode with non-canonical material which has been written usually by the same company which animates it.

What I want to discuss to-day is, why do we need them? Why are they important and what can be done to stop anime fillers from anime all together?

There has been much talk about this subject all over the place and I just want toss out my own opinion about it. First off I think some filler is good as long as it doesn’t affect the story too much which results in plot holes. Some people have said they should do it like America shows where they run for a season and then come back later in that year. Being how most anime is being done while the source is still running, the manga it makes it hard because if you catch up to the manga, you either have to do filler episodes until the manga gains ground or pass the manga and result in making the anime horrible.

Rurouni Kenshin is one example of an anime where they past the manga up and it result in not being very good in the later seasons. I think the worst anime fillers I’ve ever seen has been Naruto. For some reason they just keep on doing filler episodes while the manga is 80 chapters ahead now, the problem with it are the fillers end up causing major plot holes, undoing character development. The worst part is when they do flash back episodes, they just aren’t needed or reusing characters and themes already done.

Then you have a show like Fairy Tail which I just started watching, where I found that the stop the anime and it went off the air, while the manga is still going. They’re going to be coming back with the anime later, I find this to be pretty cool idea because the anime so far as almost no filler that I can tell and it flows much better.

So I’ll leave the rest to you, what do you think about anime fillers? Do you like them? What are your ideas on getting rid of them? I’d love to know your ideas so leave me a comment down below.
