Rebuilding a Community

001 community Rebuilding a Community
I sort of am flip on this topic and I’m sure this wont be the last time I’ll write something like this. Over the week I ran across someone who decided it was a great idea to take what they had created and restart it as something else.

Now I’m not here to name names, and I’m using it simply as an example of what I want to talk about today, that is simply rebuilding a community. This can go hand in hand in what I saw happen to a site that I generally enjoy reading and my own site, Majin Planet.

Let’s face the facts, change sucks, no one likes it but sometimes change is good. In my example I saw website A, basically website A wants to move to a new domain name, this can be a number of reasons why, the fact is they feel they could do better with the new more clean domain name.

This has been said time in and time again, is cleaning better? The most important part of a website is the content, I don’t care what anyone says. Yes a website can be ugly and there for making the site hard to read, making the content no matter how good useless. Check out Web Pages that Suck, been following them for years.

All I’m saying here is, that changing your domain name simply to make things easier for yourself isn’t always a good thing. Your going to have readers who hate it, they will leave. The question is do you care? What happens if those people know you don’t care.. well you lose more readers.

I think, and this is just me, if you have a good site, no matter how you go about changing things, people will find it, there is no question about it. If you write fantastic content, people will find it, you can’t make everyone happy and some people will be down right butt hurt over it.

So then the question is.. like in my case.. how do you rebuild a dead community? In this case, I’m talking about Majin Planet for those of you who don’t know Majin Planet is and was a Dragon Ball Anime Music Video fan site. Sure it’s been many different things before.. but in the end that is what it was and that is what I’ve been over a year or now two been transforming the site into. I’ve gone through like 4 total redesigns and one couldn’t be helped because I lost the data. Fact is, I ask myself is it worth it?

Sometimes a community simply needs to go away and that the fans who use to and many still do want it to die because sometimes.. beating a dead horse to milk it for more.. just hurts and ruins what it was more. I could name a few things.. but nothing really comes to mind as a good example of this. So that is why.. I’ve decided that maybe it’s not best to try to make something new when clearly what I had works even today. I took a look at traffic and Majin Planet, even know I haven’t done one thing and lot of things have broken over the years, YouTube Videos been removed, page links disappear, sites go down lending to dead links all with the broken age that the design, code has now it still.. still does better monthly page views than this site and I’ve been actively doing stuff for this site.

That spoke to me and that is why, I’m not redesigning Majin Planet… I’m keeping the same layout, I’m just converting it over to my current set-up using WordPress. My coding skills where great back in the day when I use to run everything from Invision Power Board, back when I actively coded, back when I was semi-good at it. Today not so much with the new HTML 5 I’m really behind and I feel like I don’t really know what makes a good website anymore, are my ideals of content is King still there?

Let me know what you think, leave me a comment down below. I want to hear from the surfers, people who just visit a website for entertainment, for information, to the webmasters and admits out there. The people who run, build and design sites. What about you? What are you views on this?

RoboCop Reboot?!

Well I don’t think I’m shocked to be perfectly honest with you, it seems that Hollywood’s likes to make movies they’ve already made. Call it lack of new talent, and I don’t mean the actors or actress, I mean the writers, the people who come up with the stories.

You might stop and wonder.. maybe we’ve already made everything there is to be made?? Maybe people are so bored of movies now that come out now a days.. well I think in some ways it’s both. Don’t get me wrong, some really fun movies have come out in the last 5 years, but nothing like the good old days of the 80s and 90s.

Sure you can question that, 80s? WTF yeah I know.. but I grew up in the 80s, just like someone who grew up in the 70s or 60s will say those movies are the shit compare to today. Truth is, I can name a number of really good movies that came out from 1980 to 1989. Let me see.. off the top of my head, Annie, Back to the Future, Beverly Hills Cop, Batman, Big, Blade Runner, Cocoon, Coming to America, Die Hard, Dirty Dancing, E.T., The Empire Strikes Back, Evil Dead, Ghostbusters, Karate Kid, The Naked Gun, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Police Academy, Predator, Rambo: First Blood , Rocky III, Short Circuit, Superman 2, and lastly Robocop.

That’s not even all of them, just browse 1980s to 1989 and you will find a massive list of movies that I bet some of them you forgot even came out in the 80s. What I’m saying is, those where some awesome movies and many of those movies had a number of spinoffs, sequels and some, yes have already had some remakes/reboots (Nightmare on Elm Street, Superman, Batman) with Robocop being next on the hit list so to speak.

I heard about the reboot months and months ago, but didn’t think anything of it really. That was until this latest news I read over the weekend about the release date, and in most cases I’ve seen when some thing gets a release date, generally means they are pretty close to making it. August 9, 2013.

Sony Pictures has set the release date for the Jose Padilha-directed which I have to say after I read the article about it. I have some hopes this movie might be pretty good if it fits within the story itself. We run into the issues with later films but right now lets focus on the one.

“In the first ‘RoboCop’ when Alex Murphy is shot, gunned down, then you see some hospitals and stuff and then you cut to him as RoboCop. My movie is between those two cuts. How do you make RoboCop? How do you slowly bring a guy to be a robot? How do you actually take humanity out of someone and how do you program a brain, so to speak, and how does that affect an individual?”

This right here, that is interesting to me. One of the biggest problems I personally have had with so many remakes, reboots of films is they are just retelling, often times just trying to do it better with better acting, better CG work. Whatever the case, that is why I think Batman Begins did so well, sure it was a reboot, sure we’ve already seen the Joker.. and Two Face.. and what’s to come BUT they did something different. They show us something we never saw before, how Batman became Batman. This, how did Robocop become that.. what was the process.. that is very interesting to me.

We’ll see however, I really love the first 2 films, not so much the 3rd and the TV shows I never really got that much into it. But we’ll see how it goes right? I mean it could totally suck.. but I’m hoping for a good film here. So what do you think? Leave a comment down below and tell me what you think.

Avengers Assemble (2012)

Back in early February I talked about The Avengers movie, when they released the Super Bowl Ad, which I thought was really cool and well done. A few days ago, the final full trailer for the movie hit the internet and I must say I am now super pump for this movie. I could go into so many things that just made me go super wow watching it. First off, the Hulk; I have to say FINAL they got the hulk right. Sure I’m going to toss out there people may not like Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner. I think from what I can tell he does a good job and the way they made the Hulk look like him, makes the Hulk I think look better than he has ever look in the last two movies we’ve seen him in.

The movie itself, has some other awesome shots, such as there is one where Iron Man is fighting and is knock down, where the Hulk saves him. Some of the issues I have with the movie and really this is just basically issues I have with comic book movies, where the heroes don’t ware a mask. I’m not that annoyed by what I’ve seen as there are a few hots of Captain America without a mask, but there are some really cool shots of him with it on. So it’s not that horrible. I am still annoyed that Thor seems to never have a helm on, nor does Hawk Eye have his mask, which I guess those are just being picky. Well nothing more to say, the movie comes on April 26th, I may even go see it in 3D.

The Avengers is an upcoming American superhero film produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures, based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name. It is the sixth installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
